I must start this post with a simple fact. I did not think I would like this flavor of oatmeal. I seriously thought of pawning off the tasting and trying out of this item on my seventeen-year-old daughter. My favorite flavor of oatmeal is currently plain, but brown sugar runs a close second.
This morning I am alone for breakfast. Alone in the sense that I am the only human currently at the house. Both Sox the Cat and Little Levi the terror of a teenage cat are keeping Bebe the Chorkie and I company on this very chilly morning in south central Texas but I digress.
Since I am attempting a grand plan of weight loss and a healthy lifestyle change, I figured that I would try the “healthy” flavor offered.
I snapped the picture and decided to go for it. The fragrant aroma of apples and walnuts filled my kitchen the moment that I peeled back the plastic. I gritted my teeth in anticipation. I read the directions on the side and heated my cup of water in the microwave, poured the aforementioned hot water to the fill line, and stirred the contents together. Oh my goodness the scents were even stronger than they were before – not in a bad way, just noticeable.
I took a hesitant bite and was pleasantly surprised. The texture was different than what I prefer but then I’m one of those adults who didn’t grow out of childhood food issues. The flavor is good, makes me think of a dessert rather than breakfast.
I wasn’t fully expecting the cinnamon flavor but I should have. I like cranberries but do not notice their flavor as much as the apple and cinnamon. I like the semi-crunchiness of the walnuts and apples.
Looking at the ingredients and nutrition facts, I am concerned with the amount of sugar added. I like sweet but it almost seems counterproductive to a “healthy” breakfast. In my experience, starting the day with so much sweetness sets up the entire day for a sugary overload kind of day, which seems like the exact opposite of a proper healthy breakfast.
